HANDLING PRE-MARITAL ISSUES

PASTOR D. ‘WALE ADEKANYE

INTRODUCTION:
I am saddled with the responsibility of sharing with the youth of this church on ‘handling pre-marital issues’ which is a very vital topic that we often shy away from as a church believing that such issues relating to sex and the stuff are not to be openly discussed, meanwhile we all hear and see these things on the Television and from radio, news papers and magazines, on the internet and other facilities available to us, so if we run away from such in the church and at home, how do we expect the inquisitive young minds to behave and react?

Base on this premise, God has given some of us the responsibilities to go out to teach and enlighten on this particular area so that marriages could be saved even before they start.

We shall therefore look at some of the pre-marital issues as time will permit us today by the grace of God.
Say to yourself, I will not miss out in Jesus’ name (Amen).

12 ISSUES TO BE CONSIDERED BEFORE MARRIAGE (PRE-MARITAL ISSUES)
1.      Commitment: is putting all you effort into making the relationship work irrespective of the other person’s attitude. Commitment is your readiness to give at all time instead of taking, it is allow yourself to make the necessary sacrifice for the betterment of the relationship, and when all partners are ready to be givers, their level of commitment to the journey will make it run smoothly irrespective of the challenges that may come their way, together they fight the battle – one will chase a thousand and two will chase ten thousand. Imagine that!

2.     Effective communication: communication could either be active or passive. Active when it is effective with proper decoding and decoding alongside with feedback, which shows that the communication is well understood? It is passive when questions are used in response to questions and in short syllable like: yes, no, I’m not hungry, did I ask you for help, what’s your business? etc. Relationship (either as single or as married) that experiences this kind of communication is not healthy at all.

3.     Constructive conflict resolution: there are bound to be conflict of various type based on individual background, education and societal influences. Ability to resolve conflict internally (without external body) shows how strong the relationship is and how lasting it would be (standing the test of time). Learn to be open minded and don’t always want to win an argument, even if you are on the right side and your partner on the wrong.

4.     Dealing with extended family relationship: in this part of the world, extended family is regarded as part of every marriage and there is no way one could totally and out-rightly avoid them. In other words, we need to devise a method of dealing with them to make peace reign. Wives should see their mother-in-laws as mothers and not in-laws, and vice versa. With this treatment, in-laws challenges will be reduced to barest minimum.

5.     Companionship: marriage is majorly meant for companionship i.e. being the partner that is needed in the life of the other to make him/her complete. When your partner is your companion, lines will fall for you in pleasant places and goals will become achievable but if otherwise, the opposite will always be the case.

6.     Working relationship: the relationship between the partners must be working in all ramification, the two have to be active in the business of relationship because it will do harm if one is active and the other passive, this will not make the relationship work talk-less of growing.

7.     Intimacy: intimacy connotes intimate close (not casual), and for any relationship to work, partners in the show must be as close as possible as their relationship grows. Then, it will be easier for them to live happily and actively when they eventually get married. Intimacy means you have nothing whatsoever to hide for your partner no matter how terrible or beautiful it may be.

8.     Trust: trust is one of the major pillars alongside love and understanding that keeps the relationship at any level of operation. Once trust becomes untrustworthy or total lost, then it is better you opt out of that kind of relationship earlier or stick to it to your own peril. Trust is believing in whatever your partner says, does or believes in. Trust God and trust your partner because he/she is your better half.

9.     Pursuit of spiritual life and relationship with God: is the guy or girl you are dating or into relationship with godly? This is the first question you need to ask and get realistic answer to before you say yes to his proposal or her acceptance. Then both of you should aspire to grow up spiritually as individuals and as partners, because a relationship that is devoid of God is definitely going to hit the rock.

10.                        Coping with personality differences: we must acknowledge that we are from different background and surely it will reflect in our individual behavioural pattern and that we can not run away from. It is of importance that we learn how to tolerate some excessive and gradually try to rearrange ourselves, because the change you want in the other person must first be seen in you.

11.                         Maturity: maturity is the ability to take decision and stand by its consequences or result as the case may be.  Age is not maturity per-say but lightly related to it, i.e. a person may be old but not mature in reacting to issues and a young person may react well to situation, that is what maturity is all about. You need to be matured all round before you enter into relationship, as in physically, emotionally, spiritually, academically, financially, mentally, socially. You must at-least reach about 30 - 40% in all the seven areas before you start thinking of entering a relationship.

12.                         Sex: this is a very vital area that many young people have ventured into which is not actually right. Sex is only licensed in marriage and not before or outside. Though, almost every advert on the media is sex motivated, but that still does not make it right. So, as children of God, you need to be patient, to wait till the right time before engaging in such, because if you are doing it now, there is all tendency that you will not enjoy it in marriage due to reasons of lack of satisfaction, boredom, sudden lost of interest and others.

Marriage is a form of ministry, and this truth is not often told even by ministers of God. We get into marriage to minister to each others needs and together minister to other people’s need as the need may arise. When we begin to see marriage as a ministry even before we enter, then we would be thinking of the accountability aspect of it as well, and that will make us seriously prepared and be equipped for the admission into the institution of marraigeology.

May we not miss it in Jesus’ name (Amen).

God bless you.

Shalom!

JOURNEY TO A GLORIOUS END.

By Pastor D. 'Wale Adekanye

The topic of discuss is to point out to us that we have a hope and a future because God has planned that for us (mankind - man/woman).

Let us examine the scriptural passage for the day’s business: Jeremiah 29:11

“For I know the thoughts that I think towards you, says the LORD, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope”. Jeremiah 29:11(NKJV)

“For I am conscious of my thoughts about you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you hope at the end”.
BBE (Bible in Basic English)

“For I know the plans I have for you - [this is] the Lord’s declaration - plans for [your] welfare, not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope”.
HCSB (Holman Christian Standard Bible)

For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.
NLT (New Living Translation)

From the above quoted versions of the scripture, there are these three words – thoughts (plans), peace (welfare, good), and futuristic hope (end), meaning that God has and will never think of plan evil for his children, of whom you are one, tell your neighbor –
‘I am a child of the Most High God, and His plan for me is to have peace and enviable end’.

Your coming into this world, into your family, into this institution and into this fellowship is God ordained because you have a purpose to fulfill at each level, and it is therefore a journey encompassing several routes at which you need to travel, but the good-news is that you are not alone in the journey.
‘Tell yourself, I am not alone in the journey of life’.

What is the journey?
The journey is becoming what your sender (creator) wants you to be, and God wants you to be the following:
(a)              His lover
(b)             His ambassador
(c)              The best help meet
(d)             To have dominion – Genesis 1:26-28.

What do I need for the journey?
When a person is embarking on a journey, he/she does not go empty handed, so also in this journey to a glorious end, you need –
i.                   Total surrender (as clay surrenders to the porter) – Jeremiah 18:4, Luke 5:4-5
ii.                 Preparedness to follow the master – Luke 5:11
iii.              Grace (God’s riches at Christ expense) – Psalm 84:11

Three things we run after in life
ü Survival – living for living sake (living from hand to mouth), just living life the way it comes.
ü Success – living life and acquiring material things, achieving educational qualifications and other worldly achievables.
ü Significance – living to fulfill purpose, doing God’s will and affecting lives positively.

7 Qualities of a virtuous woman
i.                   Trustworthy – Proverbs 31:11
ii.                 Hardworking – Proverbs 31:13-14
iii.              Prayerful – Proverbs 31:15a
iv.              Industrious – Proverbs 31:16, 24
v.                 Kindhearted – Proverbs 31:20
vi.              Modesty (in dressing) – Proverbs 31:21-23
vii.            God fearing – Proverbs 31:30

Conclusion
If you move from survival to success and you refused to be significant in life, you amount to zero before God. You may graduate with flying colours, get a well paid job, have a good home, acquire material things, but without fulfilling God’s purpose of seeking eternity and show that to others as well, means failure before your creator, because Christ has gone to prepare the glorious home for all who wants to be with God at the end of ages. Matthew 16:26, John 14:3

Prayer
No matter how tough the journey may be, you will surely get to a future with hope because the Alpha and Omega is in the journey with you, and will surely make you what He wants you to become unfailingly. I declare by the anointing that -
You will arise,
You will shine,
You will end well,
You will fulfill purpose,
You will not marry wrongly,
You future home will prosper,
You will be fruitful in all ramifications,
You will be celebrated,
You will become a virtuous and notable woman,
You shall be called blessed among women,
You will carry God’s praise all over,
You will make it at the end,
Your hope of reigning with Christ shall not be dashed in the name of Jesus.

God bless you.

Shalom!

TOPIC: FAMILY AFFAIRS: WAY FORWARD 2

PLAYING TOGETHER AS COUPLE
Many couples hardly find time to play together like friends that they are supposed to be. It is good you play together (privately and publicly) not minding who is watching or not, what should matter is the joy you derive from being with each other. Do not be shy in to play games, go sporting together, do exercises, touch and run after each other, mimic each other, dance for/with each other among several other things. Be creative enough to bring in new things, do it before your children, because it passes a lot of lessons to them.

SEXUAL RELATIONSHIP
Many homes are turn apart now based on this aspect, especially with young couples who have not taken time to talk things over with each other. I Corinthians 7:3-5 and Proverbs 5:15-20 are explicit enough on this area of marriage. Spouse should understand each other’s libido level, give in when the need arises, participate in the business, derive happiness when using the God-given gift to the benefit of the concerned. Act of denying or depriving each other opens door to defilement of marriage bed, depriving and defiling carry the same sin penalty.

PARENTAL INFLUENCE ON CHILDREN
As parents, we are the first teachers our children knows, we teach them not by what we say but main through what they see us do directly or indirectly, and these goes a long way to make or mar them in their growing years and even when they get married.
“Fathers (parents) do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged” – Colossians 3:21

Children could be discouraged when they see the way we relate with ourselves as husband and wife, when abuse set in, when we neglect our parental roles, when we solely live one of the parent to do all the discipline, when we refuse to show them the way of the Lord, when we misshape the future of the children, when we are selective or play choice making among the children, becoming harsh unnecessarily towards the children, transferring aggression from work, church, financial breakdown etc on the children among others, troubles are expected to flow in big dimension in the family. We should always remember that we have responsibilities over the children God gave us to watch over, and we are accountable.

WARNING TO CHILDREN
As children, no matter what the situation looks like, we are not expected to speak roughly, act irrationally to our parents or embark on behaviours that will not bring glory to God’s name, especially as Christian children. Several things may and will happen, but in all with the Holy Spirit guiding us, we should always remember that our parents remain our parents irrespective of their attitude or disposition towards us.
“Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. Honour your father and mother, which is the first commandment with promise”. Ephesians 6:1-2.
‘Children, obey your parents in all things, for this is well pleasing to the Lord.’ Colossians 3:20

When as a child, you see your parents going astray from God’s standard, you can go to God to intercede for them as God gives credence to children’s prayer. You are not too small to be a change agent that God wants you to be.

ADMONITION TO HUSBAND AND WIFE
As earlier stated, husband and wife are expected to be best of friends and responsible for and to each other.
“Wives, submit to your own husbands, as is fitting in the Lord”
“Husbands, love your wives and do not be bitter toward them” –
Colossians 3:18-19

The love for your wife will bring about her submission and your submission to your husband will accelerate his love flow without hitch towards you. I Peter 3:6-7

CONCLUSION
If Satan will fail woefully in his mission and strategy to achieve, the husband, wife and children making up the family should be ready for the task of combating the tricks of the evil one with love, submission, obedience and holy living, for these are the weapons of war to fight down the unresolved issues in family affair.
God bless His church.

TOPIC: FAMILY AFFAIRS: WAY FORWARD 1

INTRODUCTION
The mission of Satan is to pull down the church so that so many will not make it to heaven, and having seen this as his major assignment, his method of operation is to tear apart individual family unit, so that agreement of purpose and unity of spirit will not be there, and without these, the church’s authority and power will be frustrated and valueless. Hence, we want to look into what should be the biblical standard for the family life.

GOD’S EXPECTATION FROM THE FAMILY
“Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife, as also Christ is the head of the church; and He is the saviour of the body”.
“Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her”
“So husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies; he who loves his wife loves himself”.
Ephesians 5:22-23, 25, 28.

From the quoted scriptures, it is very obvious that marriage between a man and his wife is likened to the love relationship between Christ (head and husband) and the church (the bride), so whatever is obtainable in our relationship as church to Christ Jesus ought to be the flow in our marital relationship alongside parent-children relationship, the summation that makes the home.

UNRESOLVED ISSUES IN THE FAMILY
Here are few unresolved issues in the family affair which causes problems and we often shy away from them.

SICK COMMUNICATION
This is a very serious issue in most families as communication line as been bartered and couples finds it difficult to communicate in a simple language and mutual understanding. This problems starts most often from the relationship stage, when the young man and/or the lady misinforms each other about their respective families, or when the young man based on past family issues gives standing order to the wife to be, which in turn becomes a trouble to tackle when the reality starts dawning on the two later on.

Many couples have reduce communication into two or three syllable answer – ‘yes, no, don’t disturb me, what do you mean? What are you insinuating? Can’t you see, did I tell you ‘am hungry? If you like, do your worst, among others. These answers as they sound clearly show that peace is far away from homes where such dialogues emanate. We need to develop a better way of relating with each other as husband and wife, because our communication as parents could either make or mar the future of the children who sees and hears the parents as their first teacher and mentor.

THE IN-LAW ISSUE
So many families (especially the wives) are taking a share of their in-laws troubles as a result misunderstanding of roles, incorrect information and the sell out of wives by their husband. Until when mother-in-laws begin to see their sons’ wives as their own daughters, the rivalry and competition that ensues and generate issues will continue to hunt them. Wives too are to see their husbands’ mothers as their own mother and by so doing; peace will find its way in the family both nuclear and extended. The role of the father and mother (in-laws) is advisory rather than authoritative, so care must be taking when playing your role as a third party to the married couples. See your children in marriage as one with their spouse and don’t try to put asunder by speaking secretly or separately with one without the other.

HUSBAND AND WIFE’S INEQUALITY
So many wives (and young women about to be married) in this generation carries the notion that they are equal or share equal right with their husbands and that really is a bone of contention in many homes. As against the Biblical standard, women are not inferior to their husbands as some thinks, but that the example of Christ should be sought, and that is why the scripture says wives should submit to their husbands, submission here means that whatever a wife has (top executive in her office, earning more than the husband, well gifted, wealthy family background etc), must be under the control of the husband, because all that the church has is under the control of Christ (the husband of the church).

When you as a wife sees yourself as having the same authority with your husband, the peace of your home is under frustration (because you take decisions, nag, shout him down, do things that make him look unimportant etc) and no man wants to be pushed around by his wife.
In-as-much-as you are couple, you need to give yourselves the expected respect and jointly decide on issues while the husband authorizes the decision made, when this is in practice, the home will experience bliss on regular basis.

ONENESS AS PARTNERS
Partner means a part owner of a thing, and being a partner means one with the other half. Husband is incomplete without the wife and the wife is incomplete without the husband. You are no more two but one and what that means is that you should think, look, act and decide as one person and not two. As a wife there shouldn’t be anything emergency for you to decide outside your husband, as a husband, there are minor things that your wife can use initiative on; you should not be too rigid a man or else you will make your wife redundant. As two loves that forms one heart beat, what one says is what the other says, in oneness all that is done is expected to be in oneness of heart, spirit and attitude.

SHIFTING AFFECTION
Marriage is actually between the husband and wife and not between mother and child. So many wives have transferred their husbands’ affection to children and some to job, thereby leaving the husbands into waiting arms outside that could tear down the home. Some change overnight, leaving what they used to do before (kissing, caressing, regular copulation etc) and the less these things are made available to the spouse, the devil opens opportunity for such outside the marriage and issues start setting in. Both the man and his wife must look for way to improve how they started and not the opposite (neglect and inactiveness).

PLACE OF FRIENDS
It is important to say here that the friends we keep individually before wedding needs to change status from his friends or her friends to our friends, with these in place, it helps the family to grow rather than diminish with contribution/influence of individual friends. Friends can be a gain or a pain depending on their impact on the family life.

TAKING RESPONSIBILITIES
Both the husband and wife have roles to play in the day to day running of the family. Husband married a help-meet and not drycleaners, caterers, sex machines, children making machines, housemaid, etc. There are times that husband has to take responsibilities especially in domestic chores to relief the wife of stress and make her body ready for bed time. However, wives should not misunderstand this stand for having equal work right with their husbands.
Other responsibilities include: financial, family upkeep, children, in-laws, church and society. We must see the family responsibilities as corporate and not individual.

EXTERNAL INFLUENCE ON THE FAMILY
There are several influences out there that informs the decision we take concerning our families, either well weighed or un-weighed, and this causes issues that tears the family apart or bring them closer.
The influences range from: the church, friends, children, parents, neighbours, society at large alongside spiritual forces. We need to be careful so as not to destroy our home by our improper information and misunderstanding of our spouses.
